Center for Innovation Research
In Summer 2013 iLabs, the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Center for Innovation Research, worked with Detroit Metropolitan Airport to understand the direct and indirect impact of metro-Detroit's largest airport across the state and within the Detroit Metropolitan Air Trade Area. The project looked at the impact generated by the airport in several key categories: transportation, visitor, and capital improvements. Faculty and students surveyed 1,630 passengers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport to understand more about visitor impact.
At the state level, Detroit Metropolitan Airport has an economic impact of $10.2 billion, supports 86,000 jobs, and generates $3 billion of income for Michigan residents.
Within the Detroit Metropolitan Air Trade Area, the Detroit Metropolitan Airport has a total economic impact of $8.5 billion, supports 72,000 jobs, and generates $2.6 billion of income and earnings to workers and business owners within the area in Michigan.
