The Economic Impact of Detroit Metropolitan Airport, 2013

In Summer 2013 iLabs, the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Center for Innovation Research, worked with Detroit Metropolitan Airport to understand the direct and indirect impact of metro-Detroit's largest airport across the state and within the Detroit Metropolitan Air Trade Area. The project looked at the impact generated by the airport in several key categories: transportation, visitor, and capital improvements. Faculty and students surveyed 1,630 passengers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport to understand more about visitor impact.

Economic Impact for the State of Michigan:

At the state level, Detroit Metropolitan Airport has an economic impact of $10.2 billion, supports 86,000 jobs, and generates $3 billion of income for Michigan residents. 

 

Economic Impact within the Detroit Metropolitan Air Trade Area:

Within the Detroit Metropolitan Air Trade Area, the Detroit Metropolitan Airport has a total economic impact of $8.5 billion, supports 72,000 jobs, and generates $2.6 billion of income and earnings to workers and business owners within the area in Michigan.
